Fosamax is a medication used to prevent osteoporosis. It belongs in the family of medicine called bisphosphonates. Fosamax is basically a treatment, which prevents the onset of osteoporosis among women in their menopausal stage. It is also a treatment for men and women who have developed osteoposis due to intake of corticosteriods, a type of medication that causes osteoporosis. This medication basically works as a prevention to bone breakdown and increasing bone density, making the bones stronger and not likely to break.
How To Use Fosamax?
If you are planning to use Fosamax, there are certain things that you should keep in mind:
1. Fosamax, which comes as a tablet or syrup, must be taken on an empty stomach. This means that you must take the medicine first thing in the morning or at least 30 minutes before your first drink and breakfast. You must take Fosamax exactly as the directions prescribed by your doctor.
2. You must take each dose of Fosamax with a full glass of plain water. Never use mineral water. Swallow your Fosamax tablet and never chew or crush them in your mouth. After your intake of Fosamax, never lie down for at least 30 minutes. Lying down may cause serious problems in your stomach and esophagus.
3. Never take any other medication including vitamins, calcium or antacids after taking your Fosamax for at least 30 minutes.
Fosamax is only a supplement for a complete program of preventing osteoporosis. You must also have some changes in your diet, have a daily exercise and must also have vitamin and calcium supplements.
What Are The Side Effects of Fosamax?
If you are taking Fosamax and experience signs of allergic reactions such as difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face and tongue, new or worsening heart burn, jaw pain or numbness, then better seek emergency help.
However, if you are experiencing minor side effects such as mild heartburn, stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, joint pains, swelling of hands and feet, back pain and dizziness, then you can consult your doctor. If you experience any other side effects, it is always advisable to talk to your doctor. There are also drugs that may cause side effects while taking Fosamax. Antacids and medicines that contain calcium, magnesium or other minerals can interfere with the absorption of Fosamax. That is the reason why it is not allowed to drink mineral water and other supplements when you took Fosamax for at least 30 minutes.
You must also consult your doctor when you are planning to take Fosamax. Tell the doctor about all the medicines that you are currently taking just in case there are medicines that may not mix well with Fosamax.
